Single Life
In Chapter V and other parts of Vatican Council II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, it is stated that all the faithful, whatever their condition or state of life, are called by the Lord – each in his or her own way – to holiness according to the hidden plan of God. Hence, all states of life, priesthood, consecrated life, married couples and single life are equally holy.
Though it seems that it is God’s intention for marriage for the human race as He desires a man and woman to unite together for companionship, sexual fulfilment, perpetuation of the human race, and stewardship of the environment, Jesus clarifies that God calls some to have singleness of heart, to remain single for Him and wholly dedicated to Him and for the sake of His Kingdom: “for those to whom it has been given… The one who can accept it.” (Matthew 19:11-12).
